Obama’s Tipping Point? Not Yet.

Andrew Romano

New Supporter: Obama with Lewis. Photo: John Amis/AP.

On Wednesday I wrote that "depending how March 4 shakes out, [the Potomac Primary] results–and the likely Obama wins in Wisconsin and Hawaii–may help determine the Democratic nominee by the ides of March." My thinking went like this: After eight (and maybe 10 straight wins), the Illinois senator will lead at that point by more than 100 pledged delegates–but it won’t be enough to reach magic number (2,025) by the end of primary season in June. Looking ahead, the 400 uncommitted Democratic superdelegates–the only people with the power to put either Clinton or Obama over the top–will have a choice: 1) prolong the contest through the convention, ensuring a messy, divisive battle involving Florida, Michigan and back room wheeling and dealing or 2) move en masse to the "people’s choice" and get busy uniting the party for November.

But is Obama’s tipping point coming sooner than even I expected? Yesterday afternoon, the New York Times (among others) reported that Rep. John Lewis, an elder statesman from the civil rights era and one of Hillary Clinton’s most prominent black supporters, is suddenly planning to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Obama in" hopes of preventing a fight at the Democratic convention." “In recent days, there is a sense of movement and a sense of spirit,” said Lewis. “Something is happening in America, and people are prepared and ready to make that great leap.” Hungry for news on a slow day, the media responded with typical breathlessness. "Floodgates could open," wrote Time’s Mark Halperin, a reliable peddler of Beltway CW. "If Lewis breaks away, take whatever you thought Clinton’s chances of winning the nomination before and divide that number by as much as two — those would be the odds of her winning now."

Whoa, nelly. Not so fast. Sure, Lewis’s "defection" is significant–but in a limited sense. For one thing, it’s not really a defection; instead, Lewis is still endorsing Clinton (for the time being) but promising to cast his superdelegate vote at the convention with his Atlanta-area district, which voted three-to-one for Obama–if it comes to that. Lewis’s confusing stance symbolizes a very specific political challenge facing black elected superdelegates–and black elected superdelegates only. If Obama maintains his lead among pledged delegates, members of the Congressional Black Caucus who have endorsed Clinton will face enormous pressure to switch sides. Like Lewis, many represent districts where Obama earned 85 to 90 percent support among black voters–meaning to defy their constituents and cast a vote that lots of people would see as stealing the election from the first black president would be tantamount to political suicide.

Over the past few weeks, there’s been a slow drift of superdelegate support from Clinton to Obama. Not counting Lewis, Obama has gained 12 superdelegates since Feb. 5, while Clinton has lost a net of three. But until we start seeing a greater number of pols making the leap to Obama without such political pressure, I think it’s a bit early to say the floodgates have opened. It may happen; it may not. But any potential tipping point is still a ways away.

Offense Taken

In this campaign, there is no room for remarks of any sort on any subject.

- By Michael Kinsley

Commentsscschmidt wrote:

Michael Kinsley’s article, "Offense Taken" is way off base. The example that he cited are based on relationships, yes- whether they be a cousin or a hairdresser. However, the GREAT BIG DIFFERENCE is that when someone goes out of their way to verbally expound the degree of influence that someone has on you as well as when you tout this person as a role model or "mentor" – well now this is VERY dofferent. By doing this, you indeed are connecting yourself to this person in every way since you indicated that their beliefs were used to mentor and foster your own beliefs. When you look up to someone as a mentor or role model, you are believing in the basic principles of theirs. Obama’s open statements to th ereverend being his spiritual mentor and best friend makes his beliefs as suspect as the reverend’s. In addition, Obama can now denounce all he wants to but how could he be a parishioner for 17 years and listen to these types of statements if as Obama NOW states are "outrageous"?

I think that we need to realy questiob Obama’s truthfullness or question his judgement. In either case, the country should seriously reconsider any support for such a candidate. It is frightening that Obama’s paltform really emphasizes "change" and his real agenda would seem to indicate other.

We need to change our support to Senator Clinton and assure her success in November.

What you have to understand is what Dr. King and Malcom X came to understand before they both were assassinated, one by radical whites and the other by equally radical blacks, the root evil and problems in American transcend race and are more socio-economic in nature, just reflect to what when on in this country before the enslavement of blacks. They actually had white slavery in this country and it was called indentured servitudeand it actually ussually lasted for life instead of the historically porported 7 years and children of indentured servents were born into servitude. They main reason slavery came about was because the flow of indentured servents was drying up. As far as experimenting on citizens, this government has routinely experimented on its own soldiers of all races and even set off A-bombs upwind of cities in this country well aware of the effects of radiation. It is all about economic disparaty, and that is the reality that King amd Malcom X came to realize.

Alaska law says that you can’t look at a moose from an airplane.

In Corpus Christie, Texas, it is illegal to raise alligators in your home.

In Miami, it is forbidden to imitate an animal.

It is against the law to mispronounce the name of the State of Arkansas in that State.

In Illinois, the law is that a car must be driven with the steering wheel.

If your interested in the strange laws in this country then you should strive for an online paralegal certificate. In West Virginia, one can’t cook sauerkraut or cabbage due to the odors and the offence is subject to imprisonment.

In Missouri, a man must have a permit to shave.

The law states that more than 3000 sheep cannot be herded down Hollywood Blvd. at any one time.

In Texas, it is still a "hanging offense" to steal cattle.

To me this is wired but too others it might be OK,but i guess because i don’t live in U.S.A i live in Canada. Which by the way is a fantastic place to live in ……..well…… most of the time . So if i lived in one of those states it would be different that’s because I’m not use to wired law well that’s my opinion. thanks

I am looking for any online or home based genuine business with little investment. Please let me know or email steve at: lookafter1@hotmail.com

If you are willing to learn and put in some initial work, one of the better opportunities for home based self-employment is simply owning your own website. To make good money with it, you will need to create good content (or have it written for you) about things that people are searching for. You will also need to acquire some fundamental knowledge about search engine optimization (SEO) and learn a few basic technical skills such as uploading files, working with domain names, and perhaps some HTML.

Once you have your site set up, you can make money in a variety of ways, most of which boil down to selling advertising. There is AdSense, affiliate programs, and direct sales of advertising in the form of banners or text links on your site. It is also possible to earn money directly from companies by writing and publishing paid posts such as positive product reviews and advertorials, but this is often frowned upon by the search engines and some Web users.

The main advantage to having your own websites and running them as a business is that once you have good traffic coming in and are earning a steady income from it, you can afford to reduce the amount of time you spend maintaining your operations and can enjoy more leisure time than most of your counterparts who are working for wages in the offline world. You can also outsource much of the work (most of which involves writing articles and doing market research) to save time and continue increasing your income faster than your expenses.

Startup costs are relatively low and mainly consist of purchasing a domain name and hosting services. You can also invest some funds in content creation at the start if you want to speed things up and have more than $50 or so to spend.

Be warned that there is a significant learning curve at the beginning, especially if you have no knowledge of search engine optimization, website maintenance, or Internet marketing. This is not a "silver bullet" solution to one’s income woes by any means; realistically speaking, it will take the average person several months to begin earning significant income from this type of business. However, the long term benefits of both income potential and personal freedom are well worth it.

Hello,

I would like to make a brief introduction about myself. I am the lead singer/vocalist in a rock/pop band, The Embezzles, (name have been changed quite a few times within the past few months)and we’re very similar to Paramore and Linkin Park. We’re sort of a big deal in East Texas with an increasing fan base which continues to grow expendably great but we have a big problem communicating and contacting fans. We’ve tried everything from Post Office boxes, Private Mailboxes and social networking sties. Unfortunately, the Postal Services are on shaky ground. Postal Services have rules and regulations to combat mail fraud and other crimes committed using postal and private mailboxes which sounds convincing but the postal services are on the wrong side here.

Rather than protecting privacy they are seeking to invade it and rather than allowing some consumer choice they are looking to stifle what little competition exists. Unfortunately, scam artists also utilize the convenience of private mailboxes to hide illegal activities, such as credit card fraud, identity theft and schemes to swindle the elderly. In other words or simple terms, P.O. boxes and Private Mailboxes are growing concerns of the postal services used in order to single out P.O. boxes and PMB(private mailboxes) who have personal accounts instead of business accounts.

We would like to have an address rather than using one of our own physical home address because you guys are aware of fans(groupies) can be a bit psychotic at times when bands are in the limelight destined for stardom. Instead of selling merchandise, passing out flyers, etc. from our tour van/hotel (lol) J, we decided that we want to be able to reach fans outside of our 100 mile radius giving fans the opportunity to write personal letters to one our band members, pics or whatever the fans want to give their favorite band (The Embezzles ) <<<<<promotion tactic>>>>>,in order to converse on numerous occasions, but we do not want to give the government or postal office or any carrier service speculations or any misleading ideas that we are subjecting to a scheme to earn money or somehow get personal information from individuals. All we want is to build a connection with our fans in order to solidify our relationships to remind them of upcoming tour dates, nearby performances, or any updates we might have in order to refresh the memories of our fans.

We were recommended on some international mail forwarding service sites but getting an international P.O. or Private box seems a little suspect, wouldn’t you agree? Although they offer great services they only require your personal information….sometimes to much information. I have scavenged many postal services sites and some websites seem a bit puzzling. Even though they have U.S. Postal Forms and identification requirements they false advertise and some sites even have numerous complaints from previous customers. If I were to come across one of these misleading websites how would I be able to recognize a true and faithful postal or forwarding service from any other website posing as a legit mail forwarding service? Are there any services that allows you to apply online if so this would be my first option to cut out the hassle and run around the postal services have been giving us.

Thanks for your all your time and help.

NO PURCHASE OR ONLINE ACCESS FEE NECESSARY TO PLAY

1. HOW TO PLAY:
Register at http://www.freelotto.com. You must provide your first and last name, your e-mail address and your postal address. You may from time to time be required to provide additional information. You are responsible for updating your information should there be a change. You can do so by editing your player profile on our website. You are responsible for claiming any prizes that you may win as further described below. The receipt of emails from FreeLotto is required for your participation in and to claim prizes in FreeLotto games. You will be notified during game play if the email address you submitted will enable you to claim your prizes. If your email address does not meet these requirements, you will be given an opportunity to submit an alternate email address. Some internet service providers such as Yahoo and Hotmail.com provide free e-mail services. Some companies provide free internet access and may also be available at your public library.

Each day a certain number of ads or questions will be posted at the game site that will remain on the site all or part of that day. To submit your entries for the daily contests, choose your numbers for each of the FreeLotto® games you are eligible to enter each day and choose a sponsor to visit by clicking on its banner ad, or answer a multiple choice question. You may submit one entry for each game available to you on a given day. You may also increase the number of banner ads available to you by answering questions regarding your buying preferences. Your answers will determine if some advertisers who seek to selectively advertise their products will display their ads to you. (Example: if you indicate an interest in fishing, fishing related ads may appear on your FreeLotto® game page). You may enter once from each ad or question but you are limited to one entry per FreeLotto game per day.)

2. Players have the opportunity to play the 6 consecutive FreeLotto® games consisting of FreeLotto, FreeLotto Win A Car, FreeLotto Pay Off your Mortgage, FreeLotto FastCash, FreeLotto $100,000 GiveAway and FreeLotto SuperBucks each day. (The FreeLotto® game sequence consists of 6 games which must be played in consecutive order). The 5 games that follow Classic FreeLotto® are FreeLotto Win A Car, FreeLotto Pay Off your Mortgage, FreeLotto FastCash, FreeLotto $100,000 GiveAway and FreeLotto SuperBucks. From time to time the FreeLotto games may be offered individually or out of sequence. In such instances all other provisions of the FreeLotto Game Rules apply.

3. How to Play FreeLotto Games:
a. Classic FreeLotto
1. To enter the daily Classic FreeLotto® sweepstakes, you will need to pick 6 different numbers between 1 and 54, with no duplicates. This can be done by one of three methods: (a) pick 6 unique numbers; (b) allow the computer to pick the numbers (referred to as a "Quick Pick"); or (c) designate and save 6 numbers as "Favorites" which can be automatically selected instead of selecting unique numbers each time you enter; or (d) click on “Hot Numbers” which allows the computer to pick your numbers based on the most common drawn winning numbers.

Each day, six (6) Classic FreeLotto winning numbers between one 1 and 54 will be selected at random via a random ball drop lottery machine at around 5:00 PM Eastern Time (New York Time). These numbers will be matched against all entries received between 3:00:01 PM Eastern Time (New York Time) the previous day and 3:00 PM Eastern Time (New York Time) that day. The winning numbers will be posted after the drawing on the FreeLotto® website.

2. Classic FreeLotto Prize: If an entry identically matches each of the 6 winning numbers that appear on FreeLotto the ball drop, that entry will be awarded the Grand Prize, pending eligibility verification and the administration of a skill-testing question (referenced below) if the entrant is from Canada. Second prizes will be awarded for matching 5 of the 6 numbers drawn, third prizes shall be awarded for matching 4 of the 6 numbers drawn, and fourth prizes shall be awarded for matching 3 of the 6 numbers drawn. The FreeLotto daily results email is the sole notification of any prize winnings and prize winners must claim any prize by following the instructions within the FreeLotto daily results email. Classic FreeLotto® GRAND PRIZE: One Million ($1,000,000.00) US Dollars, paid out as an annuity of $40,000.00 per year for 25 years. If more than one entry contains all of the winning numbers, the Grand Prize will be divided evenly among the correct entries. Cash prizes for multiple Grand Prize winning entries will be paid out as an annuity based upon dividing the Prize by the number of winning entries, which will be paid out over 25 years. SECOND PRIZE: $300.00. Maximum cumulative dollar amount awarded for any drawing for the 2nd prize in the FreeLotto game is $250,000.00. Therefore, if there are more than eight hundred thirty three (833) 2nd Prize winners in any FreeLotto drawing, then those 2nd Prize winners for that drawing will be awarded an amount equal to dividing $250,000 by the number of 2nd Prize winners. (Example: if there are 1,000 2nd prize winners, each 2nd Prize winner would receive $250.00 ($250,000/1,000 = $250.00)). ALL OTHER PROVISIONS OF THE FreeLotto® GAME RULES APPLY. FreeLotto SuperBucks is played the same way as FreeLotto®, but you need to select 7 out of 50 numbers correctly with no duplicates (rather than 6 out of 54 numbers in FreeLotto®). This can be done in one of three ways: (a)pick 6 unique numbers; (b) allow the computer to pick the numbers (referred to as "Quick Picks"); or (c) designate and save 6 numbers as "Favorites" which can be automatically selected instead of selecting unique numbers each time you enter.

2. Each day, 7 SuperBucks winning numbers between one 1 and 50 will be selected at random via a random ball drop lottery machine at around 5:00 PM Eastern Time (New York Time) . These numbers will be matched against all entries received between 3:00:01 PM Eastern Time (New York Time) the previous day and 3:00 PM Eastern Time (New York Time) that day. The winning numbers will be posted after the drawing on the FreeLotto® website.

3. FreeLotto SuperBucks Prize: There is one daily prize — $10,000,000.00. If an entry identically matches each of the 7 winning numbers that appear on the FreeLotto SuperBucks ball drop, that entry will be awarded the $10,000,000.00 Prize Annuity, pending eligibility verification. There are no secondary prizes for FreeLotto SuperBucks. If more than one entry contains all of the winning numbers, the FreeLotto SuperBucks prize will be divided evenly among the correct entries. The Grand Prize will be paid out as an annuity over 41 years. Annual payments of $100,000.00 USD will be paid out for 40 years and a final balloon payment of $6,000,000.00 USD will be made in the 41st year. There are no secondary prizes for FreeLotto SuperBucks. Cash prizes for multiple winning entries will be paid out as an annuity based upon dividing the $100,000 annuity by the number of winning entries, which will be paid out over 41 years, with a final balloon payment equal to dividing the $6,000,000.00 USD by the number of winning entries. Odds of winning: – 1:99,884,400.

4. You may enter once from each ad but you are limited to one FreeLotto, one Win A Car, one Pay Off Your Mortgage, one FastCash and one SuperBucks entry per day. Your entry and your numbers picked will be assigned a unique Transaction Serial Number (TSN), which will be confirmed by e-mail and which you must keep in order to claim any prize. You must provide your Transaction Serial Number (TSN), in order to claim your prize as further described in Rule 5. You are responsible for checking your FreeLotto results email to see if you have won a prize in the FreeLotto games. This information is also available, for your convenience, on the website. You will need to follow the instructions within the FreeLotto results email to claim any prize that you may have won. If you are a Prize winner you must respond with your entry TSN and your name as per the instructions of your FreeLotto results email. The TSN and name must match the information in our database before a prize will be awarded. In the event of a dispute, the information in our database will govern. Entries will be deemed made by the person whose name was given in the registration process. Entries must be made before 3:00 PM Eastern Time (New York) on a given day to be eligible for that day’s drawing. All entries made after 3:00 PM Eastern Time will be entered into the following day’s drawing.

The body of the email must also include your first name, last name, address, phone number and date of birth. Send this to PrizeClaim@freelotto.com Failure to provide the TSN, or failure to claim the prize within 30 days of win date shall result in forfeiture. The TSN must match the FreeLotto Confirmation Number in our database for the date that the prize was awarded and must also match the player information. Once a prize claim has been verified and this information has been matched, all prize winners will receive additional instructions by mail. The instructions will require Grand Prize winners and 2nd prize FreeLotto winners to sign and notarize an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability/Publicity Release and return it to PlasmaNet Inc., within seven (7) days following the date of the attempted mail notification. Grand Prize and 2nd prize winners must provide picture proof of identification to the sponsor, which may include a driver’s license, passport, a voting card or similar government issued photo identification, which must exactly match the information provided in your FreeLotto registration. Non-compliance within this time period shall result in prize forfeiture. The instructions received by email for 3rd prize and 4th prize FreeLotto winners will offer the winners to either click on the link in the email to donate their winnings or receive a check for such amount. If neither link within the email is clicked, a check for prize winnings will automatically be sent to the winner.
Prior to being declared a winner of any prize, a Canadian resident will be required to correctly answer, without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a mathematical skill-testing question to be administered by email. If the Canadian resident does not claim their prize or cannot be contacted and the skill- test administered within 7 business days of the drawing date, the prize shall be forfeited. Failure to correctly answer the skill test question shall result in prize forfeiture.

The winning numbers will be posted after the drawing on the FreeLotto® website http://www.freelotto.com.

I think this is a scam,so be careful & stay away from this website.NO free……………………………

I agree with the first comment, too much to read.

Looks like a variation of the pop ups that promise a prize for completing a survey. The problem is, the odds of winning are not worth the amount of time it takes to complete the surveys.

These sites make money by referring you to web sites that pay for each visit. You have to click on an awful lot of websites for them to make enough to give away.

You have to admit, your band’s name is suspect, sounds almost like criminal activity. Personally I would change it to something less suspect.

You have to understand that the Postal Service and the private mailbox companies have the regulations they do because there are federal laws, passed by Congress, that require those rules for the protection of everybody. They not doing it to hassle you, they just following the law, so they don’t lose their job.

You cannot sign up for a box online because you MUST present valid identification to rent a P O Box or a private mail box at a CMRA.

ALL private mailbox services (CMRA’s as the post office calls them) are required to get identification and a permanent mailing address when you apply for a private mail box. They don’t have any choice because of the law.

Any business offering a private mailbox which doesn’t require you to complete the PS Form 1583 and provide proper identification is breaking the law and may be suspect in other ways as well.

If you have an agent, maybe your agent will receive your mail for you rather than using a PO Box or a CMRA mailbox.

One last thing, if you want to stay in touch with your fans, and have them be able to contact you, you absolutely need to settle on one address and keep it. When you keep bouncing from one address to another like you have apparently been doing, your fans will have trouble keeping up with you and will ultimately drift away.
